One Christmas, department stores in Pittsburgh successfully demonstrated that “where there’s a will there’s a way.” A crippling strike prevented them from being able to deliver their goods. At this time of year when the demand for large articles is at its peak, this could be disastrous to business. But three stores came up with an ingenious idea which enabled business to continue “as usual”.
When a customer purchased a gift that was too large to carry to the intended receiver, the store provided a large photograph of the article with a message reading: “This is your Christmas gift. We regret the delay, but it will be delivered as soon as possible.” Seeing a picture of a gift is only a reminder. But if it carries with it a guarantee that the real gift is to follow shortly, it is more than just another picture.
In countless ways God gives us a preview of the sublime gift of heaven that He has prepared for each of us for all eternity. He reminds us over and over again that it is ours for the asking. All that we have to do is to think, work and act in such a way that we show that heaven is our one and only destination.
Come you that are blessed by my Father! Come and possess the kingdom which has been prepared for you ever since the creation of the world.(Mathew 25:34).
